Guam is a territory of the United States and is in the western Pacific Ocean and is at the southern tip of the Northern Mariana Islands. With the capitol being Hagåtña and the most populous city being Dededo, over 162,000 people reside on the island of Guam, an island with an area of only 210 square miles. Guam and her people have a rich history going back thousands of years and was first introduced to the rest of the world in 1521 when Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in the service of Spain, made a stop there while on his journey to circumnavigate the globe. This is what brought over the Catholic influence on the island that has stayed ever since.
Guam was eventually ceded to the United States at the end of the Spanish-American war and has belonged to the island ever since. On December 7th, 1941, just hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the island was captured by Japanese forces who would remain on the island for another two and a half years. By 1944, U.S. forces liberated the island and brought it back into American hands.
Guam is home to many different religions, from Protestants to Hindu, and Buddhists to Muslims, only a small percentage of the island claims the pagan religions of their ancestors while most of the people, 75% of the island, claim Catholicism. Thus, making the need for the Gospel that more necessary. Though there are many churches on the island, and many different religions, there is only one way to get Salvation and many people are on their way to Hell for just not being told the truth
The island is a melting pot of different cultures, from Spanish, to Filipino or Japanese and the native Chamorro. It has so many different people and so many different religions and beliefs, it is truly a place that needs the Lord.
